SURVIVE EARLY SCARE
Old Xavs: 14-11-95 Old Camberwell: 12-11-83
The windy conditions proved difficult for the Under 19 Premier side as they struggled in the early exchanges against an improving Old Camberwell playing for a top 4 birth.
The Xavs were slow out of the block with Old Camberwell kicking 6 goals to 2 in the 1st quarter. It was the first time this young side had been down by a significant margin so early in the game, and the lads knew a big effort was required.
Coming into the first break, the team was down on a couple of KPI’s but this only showed that there was plenty of improvement left in the tank. Daniel Harangozo began to win plenty of ball around the stoppages and was assisted by Jack Amad’s fierce attack on the contest. Forward Dan Barry, looked to be the most dangerous forward on the ground as he marked well and kicked truly from just about every opportunity. Louis Tiernan was being very opportunistic and came into the main break with 2 goals to his name. The Xavs had rallied and taken a 3 point lead.
The 3rd quarter saw the Claret and Stout take real control and kicked two vital goals into the wind. Patty Ambrose, back from a week with Coburg, started to have a real presence as he presented well up through CHF. Johnny Pintal & Will “The Bull” Moffit were both rebounding of Half Back whilst also holding their opponents to minimal impact. With 2 fit players left on the bench and no ruckmen, Ed Maas had to take over ruck duties and was sensational.
With the game still in the balance and Old Camberwell playing for their season, the away side hit the front with 9 minutes still left on the clock. It seemed that the young Xavs were running out of legs. This was until Dan Barry stepped up again, took two contested marks and converted. The win showed huge character and entrenched the side 3rd position with 5 matches to play. With a trip down to Brindisi reserve around the corner, the Unders will want to take their winning streak to 3 and make a big charge towards the season’s end.
