Michael Rush †

Biography

In an era when many graduating Xavier boys looked to join Melbourne University to continue their football, Michael Rush joined the Old Xavs in 1975 during the club's dark days. He was a member of the 1976 C Section premiership, playing a memorable game against AJAX in the Grand Final.

After just 58 games, Mick sustained a career-ending knee injury, but continued to be a tireless advocate, recruiter and committee member of the club.

He also coached the U19s and the senior team, guiding the Xavs back to A Section in 1990. He was a very vocal presence on the mound on game days and his partiality extended to his commentary on Xavs' finals telecasts.

While watching his son Dan play in the U19s in mid 2003, he collapsed. Mick was diagnosed with brain tumours, which he fought bravely over the following year before dying in November 2004. His sons Martin, Dan and Joe all played for the Old Xavs.
