Old Xaverians 2023 campaign has received a boost with the additions of former AFL teammates Daniel Hannebery and Alex Johnson.
Hannebery, son of former Xavs captain-coach Matthew, joins Billy Gowers, son of former Xavs coach Andy in James Byrne's squad for the upcoming season, while Alex Johnson, whose time at the top level was wrecked by a succession of knee injuries, will join the coach's box.
Another former Swan, ruckman Sam Naismith, who will be playing VFL football this season, has nominated Old Xavs as his home club.
Dan Hannebery played 208 games for Sydney between 2009 and 2018 before moving to St Kilda where he played 16 matches. Coach Byrne said that he was excited to have someone of the great experience to add to his squad.
“We know Dan is a phenomenal trainer and just an out and out professional. We are looking forward to him coming in and setting a standard," he said.
"I'm also thrilled to have Alex Johnson in the coach's box with me. Unfortunately for Alex, he's spent a lot more time watching rather than playing, but he will be a great mentor for our players," Byrne said.
Josh Green, grandson of our first A Section premiership coach Michael Green, has also selected Xavs as his community club. Green will play VFL most weeks, but will likely don the red and black at various stages this season.
Practice matches for the men's teams begin this weekend with the seniors meeting Uni Blacks at RMIT Bundoora.
