NO REST FOR THE RECRUITERS

For the players and supporters, there hasn’t been a lot of action since late September, when the Old Xavs Reserves saluted in the early afternoon of the VAFA’s big day.

Behind the scenes, and occasionally in the newspapers, there has been a power of work done by administrators, coaches and committee people to ensure that the Red ‘n’ Blacks remain strong in what has become the most competitive league in Australia.

Several clubs, notably Uni Blues and St Kevin’s, as well as Collegians and Old Melburnians, have secured some high profile recruits. Old Xaverians have continued to press hard too, while the major concentration remains on recruiting the best of the XC alumni who have been playing elsewhere.

At least three of those alumni will return for 2020, supplemented by a couple of other established and credentialled players.

Julian Soccio, 24, who played at Box Hill Hawks and more recently at Blackburn, will join his younger brother Lucas at the Xavs. In the family tradition, Julian is a hard-hitting utility, and he is expected to add some substantial bite to the forward set-up.

XC alum Grant Valles, most recently at Sunbury where he was chosen in the Ballarat League Rep team, is a tall who can play at either end of the park. Strong overhead and with a reputation for kicking a timely goal, Valles could fill any number of spots for the Red ‘n Blacks.

XC alum Jack Noone has joined the X Men after a strong few years and 70 games with Sandringham. Noone, 24, is a defender-cum-midfielder who has been in the leadership group at the Zebras

Twenty-eight year old Sam Crocker is new to the club. Crocker has played most of his football at Old Carey since leaving St Kilda, where he was drafted. Sam, a regular Big V player, is expected to line up on the wing.

Former Hawthorn premiership player Ryan Schoenmakers has committed to the Old Xavs. A tall, versatile player who can play forward or back, Ryan played 121 games with the AFL Hawks and will provide James Byrne’s team with both extra shutdown or scoring ability.

Football Operations Manager Marcus Allan told oldxavs.com.au that he expected the team to be strong again.

“With this trio, the increased availability of formerly-listed VFL players, some serious talent pushing through from the club’s developmental ranks, and only a few players not saddling up again, we should be well in the hunt.

“The players have begun their campaign well with some strong showings on the track. With a new coaching set-up, they are not taking anything for granted, “ Allan said.
