TWICE AS NICE
Stavrou, Lane announced as co-captains
Old Xaverians has a long history in the VAFA. Since 1923, it has fielded at least one team each season in the nation’s biggest and best Amateur Football competition.
This year, of course, there has been no VAFA football, for the first time since 1945. The Ammos suspended competition in mid-1940 because of WWII. No premierships were won or awarded that year and there was no play in the years 1941 through 1945.
Old Xaverians, like all member clubs, is subject to the rules of promotion and relegation, with the ‘two up and two down’ approach contributing to the VAFA’s competitive balance.
At left is the ranking for Old Xaverians’ senior team since 1923. As each VAFA section comprises ten teams, we score the flag winner in Premier (formerly “A” Section) as 1, the flag winner in Premier B as 11, in Premier C as 21 and Div 1 (formerly “D Section) as 31. Likewise, runners-up in those sections would be scored 2, 12, 22, and 32. The club that finishes last in Div 4 - assuming seven sections of ten teams - would be ranked 70.
Red = Relegation
Green = Finals
Silver = Runner Up
