VALE ANNE DENTON
Club matriarch passes away
Over 820 devotees of the Red 'n'n Blacks gathered at Centrepiece on Saturday night to mark the Old Xaverians Football Club centenary and to toast the next 100 years of the greatest club in Australia.
President Matt Cosgrave spoke and club legend Dermot Dann linked a series of videos with his remarkable anecdotes, but otherwise the stage was left to the fourteen A Section premiership cups that are the major prizes secured by the Claret and Stout, all since 1981. The fourteen flags that match those cups were also hung, alongside the 69 other red and black pennants.
It was a memorable night, with special numbered centenary guernseys (featuring the names of every premiership player, premiership coach and life members) sellig at auction.
The formalities gave way to the dance floor before the night was too late, and those not jiving were in deep discussions about their salad days long ago.
