GM ANNOUNCEMENT
Paul Lachal and Pat Stevenson to lead OXFC
For the first time in its 102-year history, Old Xaverians will have two senior captains.
Old Xavs President Matt Cosgrave announced today that Marcus Stavrou and Campbell Lane will be the on-field leaders for Dan Donati’s senior men’s team in 2025.
“We don’t see this as splitting the captaincy, but rather doubling its effectiveness,” Cosgrave said.
“Marcus Stavrou ascended to the captaincy in 2021 at age 23 after just a few pre-COVID games for the club in 2019. In his time as skipper, he has won a Woodrow Medal and three consecutive Best and Fairest awards. His coaches and teammates love his endeavour and leadership.
“We are also in the fortunate position of having Campbell Lane join us fulltime this season. He was co-captain at Collingwood’s VFL team last year, runner-up in their Best and Fairest and voted Best Club Man by his teammates and coaches. They loved him there, and in his occasional appearances with us over seven seasons, he has demonstrated his abilities as a player and as a potential leader,” Cosgrave said.
The duo is delighted with the new arrangement.
“Having played with Campbell on quite a few occasions, I know what he brings to our team. I’m excited about his appointment because I know that he will make our leadership group and the team we lead even stronger,” said Stavrou.
“To join Stav as a captain is a tremendous thrill. He’s been a great leader for four seasons and I’m sure by putting our heads together and working as one, we will provide our teammates with great service,” Lane said.
“We’ve had some brilliant and inspiring captains through the years and our move to co-captains underlines the importance we place on the role. One great captain is vital. Having two great captains would be a blessing, and with these two young fine men, we’re confident we’ll get brilliant leadership on and off the park,” Cosgrave added.
