Club matriarch passes away
Highly decorated midfielder Sam Fisher, and exciting forward Jesse 'Chook' Palmer, who played together at Northern Blues and then Swan Districts, have signed on with the Red 'n' Blacks for season 2024.
President Matt Cosgrave said that the signatures were a result of hard work over the past eight months.
"We believed Sam and Jesse would be great fits for us, both on and off the field. After considering their many options, the pair obviously felt the same way," Cosgrave said.
"We are rapt that they'll be back together in red and black and we see them making a strong contribution both to team success and club culture," he said.
Fisher, 25, grew up in Canberra. He spent a year on the Sydney Swans list as a rookie. He led the clearance count in the VFL for 2019 and earned selection in the Team of the Year on the half-forward flank during a couple of years with the Northern Blues before heading west for four seasons. He won the Sandover Medal in 2020.
At 182cm (Collingwood six-footer) and 85kg, he is a hard-hitting onballer.
Palmer, 27, is originally from North Ballarat, Jesse was drafted by Port Adelaide in the 2014 draft. He spent three seasons at Alberton, playing 3 AFL games in 2016. He returned to Victoria in 2018 and joined the Northern Blues, and was selected in the VFL Team of the Year in his first season.
In 2020, Jesse was to play with the Collingwood VFL side but the pandemic-related shut down cost him that opportunity. He then headed west to join Swan Districts.
Jesse has played most of his recent football in the forward line, but can pinch hit in the midfield when required.
Standing at 188 cm (6 ft 2 in) and weighing 86 kg , Jesse is a strong mark and a contested hardball specialist.
