On the day when we celebrate women all around the world, the OXFC is thrilled to announce that the 2024 season will feature two OXFC Women's teams!
After a transition period post-COVID, the best decision for the WOX in 2023 was to downsize to one side and consolidate for the future. The players and coaching staff did an amazing job last year, and have created a positive, welcoming environment that is attracting many young players.
The club identified early last year that in order to grow the program, we needed a targeted approach to schools for sustainable feeders of players. Football Director Matt Ball, Women's Football Director Gabby Seymour and Senior Coach Jeremy Sutcliffe did an incredible amount of work engaging with schools to offer coaching assistance, run training sessions and most importantly, highlight the pathway for women's football post-school.
On the back of their hard work, we have seen a tremendous number of players come through training over pre-season, with 60+ girls expressing interest, and more still coming down. With these numbers, and a number of past players expressing interest to assist, the coaching staff were extremely confident we can field two teams this season.
"The goal for the club was always to have multiple women's sides, but the response in players has been much quicker than we could have imagined. It is a direct result of the amazing work Gabby, Matt and Jez have done," OXFC President Matt Cosgrave said.
'Huge credit to the players, who have shown such a passion for football and the club, which has rubbed off on their friends. We always say players are our best recruiters, and the WOX have shown that," he said.
The structure of competitions is still being finalised, however it is likely that we will have a team in Division 1 and a team in Division 4, with the VAFA working to fixture the games at the same venue as often as possible.
