Old Xavs travelled west to Hoppers Crossing to meet the WRFL powerhouse in a triple header.

The day began under cloudy skies, with warm rain making conditions for the makeshift Red ‘n’ Blacks U19/XC lineup. The lineup of 20 boasted some famous OX names, including schoolboys Hamish Bowen (son of John), and Lachlan Ford (no relation), but could not match the Warriors conversion. Despite this, there was steady improvement  throughout the game, with commitment never in question.

The rain disappeared and the sun appeared. The hot northerly blew hard as the Reserves took the field. The Xavs were too strong for the local team, with Jayke Barrack dominating from defence, providing drive and dash. Several others impressed, with the strong performances of younger players a feature.

The seniors kicked with the wind in the first term and jumped away to a solid lead. They were never headed, with the defence solid and the midfield on top. Cauley Beetham re-assumed his tagging role, which he performed with aplomb, but he also found the ball at will and was clearly best afield. Tom Gilbert continued his fine form and was at his creative best. Jordan Kelly moved smoothly and was all class, while Jason Holmes and Chris Prowse were strong in the ruck.

Down at Mt Martha, where six teams will play against SKOB next Saturday, the two U19 teams were in fine form, destroying those same St Kevin’s.
