RALPH'S NEW ROLE
O'Shaughnessy is Xavs' Footy GM
Three forfeits by Friday meant the Old Xavs fielded just seven squads in R11, and for the first time in the club’s history, all seven fixtures were at home.
Five wins and two losses were marked in the ledger by day’s end, with the WOX and U19 Twos, down on firepower, both falling to Old Melburnians. The other teams won, either by endeavour or gift.
Harrison Bell booted a senior career high six goals, ruling the Roche as in days of yore, and leading the Rossoneri to a 94-point win over struggler Caulfield Grammarians.
The Hoops matched it early, but fell away as the home team found some solid form and then finished with a fourth quarter flood of goals.
Big Al Spralja again dominated the ruck contests and if there is to be a trophy awarded at season’s end for the most improved (in Premier section), his name is surely already engraved on it.
Big V squad member Jack Hewitt kicked four in another livewire performance, and Billy Kennedy and Jimmy Langford snagged two apiece. The tireless pair Grant Valles and Campbell Lane also registered a brace, while debutant Lucas Agnoletto, once a stalwart of Sam Shaw’s U19 teams, put one through the sticks in the final term to great acclaim.
Across the back, Joe Tobin, Jordan Kelly and Sam Ralph stopped and rebounded to their heart’s content, while Lane and Jordy Troiani had plenty of classy touches.
The Red ‘n’ Blacks remain two games outside the four, but the percentage boost strengthens their position. Next week, a return bout with Uni Blacks, who seem less imposing away from home. There is life yet in the Claret and Stout.
