RALPH'S NEW ROLE
O'Shaughnessy is Xavs' Footy GM
Old Scotch made the most of the sloppy conditions as they outmuscled Old Xaverians in their R6 clash at Camberwell.
In the opening half, the Cardinals jumped the visitors in each quarter before the Red n’ Blacks fought back to draw as good as even.
In the third term, the Claret and Stout were all over the Red Men and midway through, a fine snap from Harro Bell sent the x Men to their biggest lead.
This was short-lived, however, as the Caledonians did all the remainder of the scoring until lemon time.
An early goal in the last from Charlie MacIsaac gave the Xavs a chance, but Scotch took over again, putting together a fine team performance to run out convincing winners.
Jack Hewitt, with three goals, always looked dangerous, while Dan Robinson was effective from the midfield. Charlies Holmes and MacIsaac gave plenty, as did Will Goss and Dos Troiani, but it wasn’t the best day for the X-Men, who fell to 3 and 3 on the year.
Goal Kickers: J. Hewitt 3, D. Robinson, C. MacIsaac, H. Bell, A. Trigar, C. Whitehead, B. Moyle
Best Players: J. Hewitt, D. Robinson, C. Holmes, C. MacIsaac, W. Goss, H. Troiani
The Red ‘n’ Blacks, playing in the 9:20 timeslot and not accustomed to dew kicking, came in a hurry in the final term but still fell to Old Scotch by 13 points, despite having more scoring shots than the home team. Bad kicking is bad football, particularly when the opposition is good enough to capitalise.
The WOX were no match for the former Premier powerhouse Marcellin, with the Sheagles jumping out early and going on to win comfortably.
Goal Kickers: C. Lacey, C. Pittard
Best Players: E. Craig, M. Mennilli, E. Neuwirth, J. Stevens, A. Fairweather, C. Lacey
Xavs won an enthralling contest with the Cards in the curtain raiser at Camberwell. With a large crowd there to see the stars of tomorrow, there were some stand-out performances.
Will MacIsaac kicked three, Harry was best afield, but the big mover on the charts was Makuc Mahommed, whose aerial strength and kicking were things of beauty. He might not have much of a football past, but he has a big future.
Goal Kickers: W. Macisaac 3, M. Mahommed 2, W. Exell 2, H. MacIsaac, N. Honeyman, W. Stevens
Best Players: H. MacIsaac, D. Calvert, K. Walford, W. Stevens, L. Moore, M. Mahommed
Jake Sandman booted five as Batty’s Boys returned to the winners circle with a big win over Parkdale.
Andy Batten reports:
We headed down the bay for the second week in a row, this time to face Parkdale. Parkdale sat one spot below us on the ladder but had pushed Beaumaris all the way earlier in the season, so were not to be taken lightly. We set the arrival time 20 minutes earlier than usual to ensure we were suitably prepared for the early start and wet weather, and there was a good energy in the rooms prior to the game. We welcomed Jacob Sandman for his first game of the season, as well as Sam Purcell and Harry Mcauliffe for their first game in the ressies which added to the positive anticipation.
The first quarter started much the same way as other weeks, with Will Troy winning the tap. We looked stronger in the contest early, and we attained a sense of control across the ground. Mcauliffe looked hungry and applied great early pressure. The backs led by Luca Santalucia and Connor Spears were active and vocal, marshalling the troops and setting up our structure. Harry West sold some decent candy on the far wing, twice, and Luke Fares continued his excellent start to the season providing great drive out of the middle. The forwards, led by Matt Dahlsen with a silky dribble goal, were working hard to lock the ball in and as the quarter neared completion, Sandman signaled his return with a strong mark and goal to give us a 5 goal lead at the first break.
The second quarter saw Parkdale come out with renewed spirit. Their work-rate had lifted and they suddenly had spares through the middle of the ground. They were getting repeat entries, with Spears, Liam Peppard, James Spiridonos and Will Wrigley doing well to lock on their key forwards. When we did get the ball out, we looked dangerous in attack. Justin Salce threatened, Matt Dahlsen worked up and back linking defense with attack, and Luca Patane was cleanest in the slippery conditions. There was some slight overuse creeping into our game which gave Parkdale a few turnovers, however we steadied late to claw back a couple of goals and only lose the quarter by a solitary point, taking a 29 point lead into the main break.
Simplify our ball movement and cut out the overuse was the message at half time as the boys agreed to get back to basics. We regained a sense of control in the game, but couldn’t quite put the damage on the scoreboard. Parkdale put a spare back and clogged our forward line. Despite this, there were some special moments when Purcell goaled on debut and captain Santalucia goaled from distance. However Parkdale had worked their way back into the contest, and if not for some poor kicking and excellent defending from Spears, Wrigley, Spiridonos and Will Beattie, might have made some bigger inroads. However, we maintained a 32 point lead at the final break.
As the sun peeked through the clouds to start the final quarter, the boys cracked the game open. Salce got two in a row and Sandman marked strongly before kicking his fifth. Charlie Bourne finished the game strongly, taking advantage of the drying conditions and delivering cleanly forward. While Purcell bagged his second from an outrageous angle. We kicked 9 goals straight for the quarter while our backs kept defending until the final whistle, only allowing a couple of rushed behinds to seal a terrific 82 point win. A great reward for our much-improved effort this week, though a few things still to work on. A huge opportunity next week as we play Old Melburnians for the second time this season, and a chance to get ahead in the wins column. The ground and time is still TBD, with any outcome still a possibility (home, away, home away from home etc).
Thanks to the parents that came down to sunny Parkdale and help with the jobs… apologies for not realising the VAFA had provided a full complement of umpires. To those who went to the 100 year Gala, I hope you had a fun night and are suitably inspired to build your own legacy at the club.
