TWICE AS NICE
Stavrou, Lane announced as co-captains
Representative football returned to the VAFA on Saturday when the senior men’s and senior women’s teams clashed with the Perth Football League at Elsternwick on Saturday.
The Big V women had a solid win over the Sandgropers to commence proceedings, though the only WOX representative in the squad, Tahryn Mant, was not chosen in the final lineup.
In the men's team, Old Xaverians was well-represented by three of its best season performers. Claret and Stout skipper Marcus Stavrou was chosen in the middle and was instrumental in the Victorian ascendancy at clearances.
Charlie MacIsaac and Jack Hewitt played in the forward line and performed very well for four quarters.
But with the scores tied at the end of regulation, there were two 5-minute overtime periods tacked on to decide the contest. It was here that the two Xavs boys lifted the required notch to seize the win.
Charlie MacIsaac booted two goals in extra time, to bring his total for the day to six. He was awarded the medal for best afield without any controversy at all.
Jack Hewitt again displayed his nous around goals and competed as only he could.
In the end, the Big V triumphed by 19 points, a result that would not have happened without the class of the boys from the Red ‘n’ Black.
